DescriptionOval serving tray (tea). One piece bottom, edges rounded with groove around entire edge. On top of bottom piece, nailed through bottom, is fence. Fence made of two pieces, where joined are angled and lapped, with small brass pin inserted near top edge. In center of bottom piece is inlaid almond-shaped medallion with painted lines around edge, and in center painted lines forming shield with letter "J" in center. At each end of tray is a brass handle with two uprights bolted through bottom piece on inside of fence. Spur on handle uprights hooks over top edge of fence. Handle uprights scrolled out with volutes at tips. Handle cross piece swelled at center. All but bottom surface of wood varnished.

Tolman Catalog, Tolman Number 23: "Oval Tray, inlaid. with letter J in center, once belonged to Henry David Thoreau's maternal great-grandfather, Colonel Jones, of Weston, who died 1774."
