DescriptionPainted pine and maple. Green paint (faded from blue). Adjustable candlestand with ratchet, holds two candles. Base is half section of a log, four octagonal carved legs inserted at angles. Top of base has two inserted uprights, which are doweled into cross piece at top. Cross piece has hole in center for ratchet. Moveable vertical piece with four ratchet slots cut in side. Horizontal brace at bottom with slots cut in ends that fit uprights. Horizontal arm with hole at each end for candle. Pawl fits into a slot in upright and pivots on a wood pin which fits in ratchet slots. Legs glued in place. Uprights fit into holes in top of base, with thin wedges and nails added. Other joints have pieces carved to dowels, with pinks locking them in place.
The pine form was considered "no frills" and "democratizing" by early antiquarians like Russell Kettell and therefore highly sought after. In 2006, David Wood expressed some doubt as to the authenticity of the form; it is possibly an early 20th century reproduction or fraud.
