DescriptionDocument box (formerly, bible box). Pine, oak or ash, iron. Large, flat Jacobean box with hinged lid. Front panel has frisian carving, a repeated pattern of intersectin circles which form triangular shapes. Edge of bottom cut at an angle, projects on all four sides. Pairs of grooves at front and back of lid. On underside of lid at both ends is a strip of oak which fits outside the side of box when closed. Lid hinged with two pairs of interlocking wire loops. Sides fit into rabbets on front and back panels, nailed together. At each joint inside, roman numerals inscribed on each piece of wood: I, II, III, and X. Present lock is a replacement. Original plate over keyhole missing. Outside once painted or stained brown. Carving may have been painted white and red.
