DescriptionThe crest rail is carved with a shell with nine lobes and volute ends and is mortised for the stiles, the joint not pinned. The vase-shaped splat is tenoned into the crest rail and the splat shoe, which is tenoned into the stiles 1.25" above the level of the seat rails. The compass-shaped seat rails are tenoned into the back stiles and front cabriole legs, which end in pad feet. The back legs are chamfered from 2" below the seat rails to the stretchers. Four knee brackets are glued and nailed to the front legs and seat rails. The side stretchers are tenoned into the back legs, the joint pinned, and the front legs. The back and medial stretchers are attached with round tenons. Some tacks from the original webbing and muslin covers remain in the rails. The pattern of the ornamental brass tacking is apparent. Knife cuts in the rails indicate the original cover was leather. Reproduction seat cover made of real 18-century Russia leather- reindeer hide tanned in far norther Europe- salvaged from a shipwreck in the 1990s.
