DescriptionCast iron pot (kettle) with cast legs and ears attached after casting, and cover which sits loosely inside top of pot. Pot round and bulbous, flaring at rim slightly. Pot has three legs, flat on inside, round on outside, and tapered. Ears of pot both have right angle; ends of heavy bail handle hook around ears. Ring near rim of pot, two rings somewhat lower, and another at mold seam mark. Mark near rim of pot (see over). One gate mark, c. 5" L, on bottom of pot. Mold seam marks are: one around bottom of pot, and two vertical ones from this. Cover is a roughly circular sheet of iron with semi-circular handle riveted to center. From the gate mark on the bottom and the pattern of mold seam marks, this was cast in sand, a technique first used in England in 1707. Smaller, angular ears (such as these) indicate an 18th century date (they became round by 19th century).
