MarkingsBlade engraved: "Taken from an Officer from the detachment from Lord Howe's Army under command of Lieut. Col. Smith and Major Pitcairn on their retreat from Concord and Lexington, April 19, 1775." Label inside box: "Sword taken by Nathaniel Bemis of Watertown, from a British officer whom he shot on the retreat from Concord and Lexington, April 19, 1775." On bottom of box: "EXHIBITION OF REVOLUTIONARY RELICS. 1876/ Sword taken by Nathaniel Bemis of Watertown, from a Brutish [sic] officer whom he shot on the retreat from Concord and Lexington, April 19, 1775. Exhibited by C.V. Bemis." Inscription in pen on bottom: "Dr. Bemis / Medford"

DescriptionEngraved steel blade. Carved bone hilt in the form of a dog's (?) head. Silver fitting and guard at the base of the handle or hilt. Sword encased in wood (mahogany?). Bullet also inside case with leather scrap underneath.
