MarkingsLegend in script on the inside of the lid has been translated by A.P.A. Varenkampf (?) Instructor in Art of the Netherlands at Smith College, as follows: "I like to open my box but not to people who spong (wear soft slippers, literally)."

DescriptionEngraved tinder box or tobacco box, brass. Lid is engraved with a design representing the ascension of Eli into Heaven, and the shedding of his mantle upon Elijah. There is a rebus across the front of the box which may be read thus: "A strong heart is king of the world."
