DescriptionOak, ash. Hand hewn and whittled, pinned with wooden pegs, slat-backed. No turnings. Arms on top of front supports and are pierced by dowels. Front and back posts are hewn in rectangular contour characteristic of Cromwellian chairs. Three back slats in early wedge-shaped form. Rockers are ["of course"] later additions. Note in folder: in Concord this chair has always been considered an individual production of a pioneer workman to whom a turning lathe was not available. Recently, however, several other chairs in this style have turned up, both of which can be traced as in this case to the neighborhood of Cape Cod.
