MarkingsOn back right of top slat is inlaid a small piece of ash with carved mark: "H B". Scratched mark on front of left back post: "A". Paper label with illegible ink writing, placed over "HB" mark on top slat.

DescriptionMaple, ash. Slat backed chair. The ball turnings on the posts and the finials at the top of the rear posts link this chair with others attributed to Boston shops. Turned chairs like this example comprised the inexpensive end of a line of chair types. Walnut, joined chairs with leather seats or slip seats were the more expensive seating forms at this time. Barrett branded his initials on the back of the upper slat. Lower front stretcher not original.
