DescriptionReceipt from the account book of Jashua Brown, c.1838. Two pieces of paper. First is a piece of blue colored paper, printed in ink reads, "Concord Bank. / Concord, Mass August 22, 1853 / A note signed by you, for $208, 10 cents, / is due this day. It being the last day of grace, you are requested to pay the same / immediately / John M. Cheney, Cashier." On verso is written in ink "Mr. [Illeg.] Brown / Concord / Mass." The second is a piece of paper ripped at the top, correspondence to Mr. Brown, text is both handwritten and typed, "Concord Bank Massachusetts August 19, 1853 / A note signed by you for $203, 10 cents, / is due this day; you are requested to pay the same / John M. Cheney Cashier." Also a hole on the middle right edge. The account ledger book is bound with glue and thread and contains lined paper. The book is filled with notations written in black ink detailing accounts and transactions paid/owed. He had a shop in Concord that produced kegs made to hold nails. A principle customer, who bought the kegs by the thousand, made nals in Newton. Brown evidently took some of his pay in nails, which he resold to Concord customers. Also contained within the account book are 5 paper receipts.
