DescriptionSteel, copper, brass; unidentifiable materials. A section of cable, seven copper strands surrounded by insulation and ten steel strands with more insulation, bound at each end with brass collars with applied embossed brass labels reading at one end: "TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION &/ MAINTENANCE COMP: LIMITED" and at the other "CONTRACTORS. LONDON/ ATLANTIC." Sample of the first successful (though short-lived) transatlantic cable.
