MarkingsThe pieces came with a cardstock tag, c. 1870, 6 7/8 x 2 1/8, with an ink inscription on one side: "Brought over on the 'Mayflower,'/ by the ancestor of the Heyward/ family of concord, Mass." and on the other: "To be returned to/ Mr. Frank Hosmer,/ Forge Village,/ Mass."

DescriptionMortar and pestle (1995.16a,b). Unidentified hardwood, possibly lignum vitae (pestle). Mortar: turned hardwood hollowed cylinder slightly waisted and decorated with single lines; four screwholes are in the center of the underside. Pestle: turned to a bottle shape. Two different hardwoods, unidentified.
