MarkingsPaper label on the back in Lavinia B. Bates' hand reads: "This portrait of my grandfather I give to the Boston Public Library to accompany the painting of "The Savior." Also, the portrait of my father the late Henry Bates and the photograph of my late brother William Henry Bates in an oblong carved gilt frame making the third generation of the owner of the painting of "The Savior." I should like to have them all put in the Bates Gallery." Another label, also in L.B. Bates' hand is mostly illegible.
