DescriptionPen: goose quill, cut down feather and tin repair. Label: manuscript on cardstock with silk tie. Sometime between 1862 and 1874, Sophia Thoreau wrote out a poignant message on a piece of cardstock and attached it with a coral-colored silk ribbon to a quill pen with its barbs peeled and trimmed in the fashion typical of the 18th and 19th centuries.
