DescriptionEarthenware. Washington and Masonic pitcher. Transfer printed in black under the glaze. Stock plates made for decorating such pieces were often used indiscriminately to fill the required space on a piece. One side, design familiar on on of the numerous "Washington pitchers," showing the head of Washington with Liberty and Justice, surrounded by 15 stars and the names of the 15 states in the Union (in 1792). On other side, fanciful arrangement of Masonic emblems. "Masonic pieces" were made in numbers during this period for both public and private uses. The combination of the two designs on this American market pitcher was no doubt frequent and logical, since Washington was at the time of the Lodge at Alexandria and the foremost American Mason.
