DescriptionInside pencil box sample case (2018.009.010) covered in leather with brass tack design and rectangular with domed lid, and large lidded cardboard box insert (2018.009.010.1) containing this smaller, lidded white cardboard box with gold filigree pattern. Writing on top cover reads "1 Gross/Monroe's/Finest Lead Pencils/Carefully Graduated for Drawing/And for the use of Engineers, Surveryors, etc./Highly Improved/And Warranted by/Francis Monroe/Sole successor to the original manufacturer/Concord, MA." The box itself contains one small tray that fits inside.
