DescriptionEmpire style sofa with four large, turned legs. Curved panel across back. No springs. Covered with bright green repp (upholstery); separate cushion. Originally covered in black horsehair fabric.

Contemporary with work table Th44, and apparently also Grecian in style. The sofa has a lyre-shaped elevation similar to that of the work table. Like the work table, the sofa relies on vibrant mahogany veneers on the bowed crest rail and swelled seat rail for coloristic effect.

Overall, the sofa resembles furniture made by Boston craftsmen like William Hancock in the 1810s and 20s. One detail on this sofa, a stylized lotus blossom on the scrolled arm, is characteristic of Boston makers like Hancock, Isaac Vose, Emmons and Archibald, among others.
