DescriptionBlack lithography on cream cardstock. Image of small building and lean-to, in a wooded setting. At bottom, "Thoreau's Hut, Concord, Mass." On back, "Historical Series of/ Revolutionary Towns/ Published by Edith A. Buck/ Concord, Mass." Stamped in red, "All rights reserved/ Concord Antiquarian Society/ Concord, Mass." Based on a sketch by Mrs. R.T. Baker, see Th78. The sketch was given to Edith Buck by Mrs. R.T. Baker in 1900; the postcard had to be produced after this date. In the 1890s, Edith Buck sold Concord souvenirs out of a small booth at the foot of the drive at The Old Manse by the North Bridge. This is a very early instance of the marketing of Thoreau’s legacy. Buck also produced fans with views of the North Bridge, Emerson House, and other area attractions, which were printed in Boston and decorated and assembled in Japan. In 1897, Thoreau souvenirs outsold those of Emerson and Hawthorne.
