DescriptionManuscript on paper (holes in paper disrupting the narrative): "A description of a city without giving the name/ On a small island in south western part of the New England states is one of the largest cities in the world. It was founded by the [auten?] and by them was called New Amsterdam but since the name has been changed. This city holds communication with all parts of the world and its wharves are constantly crowded with [vessills from various places loading and unloading, crossed out] their cargoes, a great number of the merchants live in a city a little way to the east coming down every morning and returning at evening. To the east of this city is a large beautiful island containing a few cities and a rail road connecting the two principal ones. The river which runs along the west side was discovered by a dutch sea captain in the year 1609 who was endeavoring to find a north west passage to China he ---- a this river and [navigated] it for a little way. From this sea captain it --- its name and is one of the principal rivers in the new england states. Sailing up the river you will --- a fine view of the country which is very romantic and a number of towns and villages. And about a hundred and twenty miles is a large city formerly settled by the Dutch area is the capital of a large state this city the terminus of a large canal one of largest in the world nearly parallels with this there is a rail road and over these are transported great quantities of grain flour and merchandise."
