DescriptionTextile. Embroidered funeral piece (mourning picture) in memory of Reverend Asa Dunbar, Henry Thoreau's maternal grandfather. Long and short stitch in silk thread on silk ground. The silk seems to have been originally blue, but has faded to oyster white in most places. Design, which is contained within the oval, includes the usual figure of a lady beneath a willow, mourning at the urn of the dear departed. A tablet reads:
