This bust made by Walton Ricketson (1839-1923) is among the earliest posthumous portraits of Thoreau. Ricketson's family knew the Thoreau family. Ricketson specialized in portrait sculpture and his subjects also included Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott. He had a studio in Concord in the late 19th century and then in New Bedford until his death.
