The Thoreaus rented or owned a number of houses in Concord during Henry Thoreau's lifetime. They bought a lot in 1844 on Texas Street (now Belknap Street) in a new development located near the the Fitchburg Railroad station. They built a two-story house on it, with Henry contributing some of the labor. Referred to as the Texas House, it was partially destroyed by fire Jan. 19, 1938, and was demolished in the spring of 1954.
