DescriptionWheelwright's Stone / Circular,5' 4" diameter / 16" deep at the circumference / Perforated by a central hole 18" in diameter/ to hold the hub. / When the wheel was in position, the iron tyre was heated red hot, placed about the circumference of the wheel, and quickly cooled by being drenched with buckets of water. The contracted tyre thus served not only to keep the felloes in position, but to protect them from wear. Across the bottom of the hole was a large, bent spike. Around this was passed a chain which was attached above to a screw arrangement by which the hub was raised or lowered to the desired position. Beneath the hole was a crude cement bowl whose purpose is unknown.
