DescriptionWood plaque with names of Independence Engine Co. Plaque is single board, round at top, square at bottom, edges slightly chamfered. Hole at center top and wire for hanging. On left side, leather strip with stripes, presumably pencil or pen holder? Applied at bottom is paper, ruled with list of 48 names and columns for months of the year. Above fire roster is applied piece of paper with printed eagle which has been painted over in brown with a red 3 at neck. Banner through eagle's beak painted blue with red and white lettering: INDEPENDENCE ENGINE, Co. Background and top painted white or off-white color. Back painted dark blue or black, edged red. Varnished over paint? Roster itself is ruled horizontally, and divided into two columns, each further divided into a column for names, and twelve narrow columns headed with months of the year. Entries of 50 appear in many month columns, other numerical entries appear after some names. 48 names are listed. Several names crossed out and discharged written in. After one name, M. COLLINS, appears died July 8th 1866. Independence Engine Co No. 3 (fire engine company). Concord Fire Society, organized in 1794.
