DescriptionManuscript (ink) on paper. Written by Moore to Adams Tolman of the Concord Antiquarian Society. Letter concerning Queen Elizabeth's Red Velvet Trunk (F517) The trunk belonged to Mr. Moore's maternal grandmother, Sally Prescott, wife of Humphry Hunt. She gave it to Mrs. Ann Maria Hunt Moore of Champlain, NY and she gave it to Cummings E. Davis. Sally Prescott had received the trunk from her father Willoughby Prescott, who had it from his mother, Anna Lynde Prescott, wife of Dr. John Prescott of Concord, and daughter and granddaughter, respectively of Judge Nathaniel Lynde of Saybrook, Conn, and Deputy Governor Francis Willoughby of Charlestown, Mass. By tradition, Princess Elizabeth gave it May 29, 1555 to Miss Margaret Willoughby, later Lady Arundel. A Francis Willoughby who came to Conn. in 1662 mentions the trunk in his inventory, and he was probably related by marriage to Margaret. It was through Susanna daughter of Francis Willoughby of Charlestown that the trunk came to New England.
