DescriptionFrench Revolution paper currency (money, bond). Quinze sols, "Domaines nationaux./ Assignat/ de quinze solds,/ payable au porteur." Serie 40. Small engraved image of two allegorical figures, sitting. Two embossed stamps.
From Collections Committee notes: the French currency is an interesting comparison to the Massachusetts promissory notes. The Revolutionary French Government seized real estate, and it is real estate that backed up the assignats, which were used as pay vouchers; before long the notes were worthless.
